Guiding Principles and Examples

There are four overarching areas of faculty responsibility under which faculty are reviewed for reappointment, tenure and promotion. The Personnel Committee has established some ‘guiding principles’ that speak to what the college, and by extension the Personnel Committee, values with respect to two areas: teaching effectiveness and professional engagement. The Personnel Committee looks to these guiding principles when reviewing personnel files. These guiding principles are also intended to assist candidates in navigating their professional trajectory at Kalamazoo College, framing their trajectory in their personal statement, and understanding what types of actions and materials provide evidence of that trajectory. The guiding principles can also assist chairs and advocates in their roles as mentor to the candidate.
